Common Scams to Watch Out For
Job Scams
On various websites and social media platforms you may encounter fake job postings. As part of this scam, you may receive an offer via email to interview for a work-from-home position. A job interview is conducted online using a chat-related app (e.g. Google Hangouts, WhatsApp) and you are told you have been offered the job. Upon acceptance of the job offer, you are asked to provide personal information, such as social insurance/social security numbers or bank details, under the guide of job applications or background checks. You may also be instructed to provide payment, either to secure the job position or to purchase the necessary equipment, software, and training materials.
Red Flags:
- Unsolicited job offers via email or social media
- Requests for payment to secure a job position
- Emails from unofficial or suspicious domains
- Immediate job offers that promise unusually high salaries, bonuses, or commissions for entry-level positions or minimal work
- Requests for sensitive information like social insurance/social security numbers, bank account details, or copies of identification documents early in the process
- Unprofessional communication such as poor grammar, spelling errors, and pressure to act quickly
Investment Scams
Fraudsters may offer you fake investment opportunities, promising high returns and using our company’s name to gain trust. As part of this scam, you may be approached through online ads, social media, dating apps, or “wrong number” text messages.
Red Flags:
- Guaranteed high returns with little or no risk
- Pressure to invest quickly
- Complex or unclear investment strategies that are difficult to understand
- Lack of verifiable information about the investment
- You can verify investment opportunities through the Canadian Securities Administration or Finra’s BrokerCheck (U.S.)
Inheritance Scams
Scammers may contact you claiming you are the beneficiary of a large inheritance or investment account, requiring payment of fees or taxes upfront to access the funds.
Red Flags:
- Unexpected notifications of large inheritances or investment accounts
- Requests for personal information or advance payments
- Emails or letters with poor grammar or spelling mistakes
