Bringing financial education to the forefront this back-to-school season

As students head back to the classroom, it’s time to talk about teaching critical, yet often overlooked, financial education skills in our communities.

Mother and child embracing

Financial literacy is one of the most important areas of education; yet not all students are receiving the preparation they need. That’s why IG Wealth Management and the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE) are working together to bring financial education to the forefront this back-to-school season.

Free financial confidence resources for Canadians

CFEE is dedicated to educating Canadians of all ages and backgrounds on how to best tackle their financial decisions with confidence and competence. In partnership with IG, CFEE has released three free financial literacy guides: Money and Youth, Money and You: Seniors Edition and Indigenous Peoples’ Money and Youth. Each resource is comprised of simple modules to help individuals increase their financial confidence and feel empowered when dealing with their finances.

The impact of working together to empower communities

The partnership between IG and CFEE has made a notable impact on these underserved communities with respondents reporting an average 75% increase in their personal financial confidence after participating in a CFEE workshop. Together, IG and CFEE have hosted workshop attendees from across 11 provinces and territories, helping drive change across Canada.

Money and You: Seniors’ Edition: As a result of the partnership between IG and CFEE, over 400 seniors have participated in 20 workshops for Money and You: Seniors Edition. This has resulted in a 71% increase in post-workshop financial confidence, demonstrating that IG’s and CFEE’s efforts are making real change in communities.

Money and Youth: Over 400 students, educators and parents similarly participated in 40 Money and Youth workshops held by IG and CFEE throughout 2024, leading to a 66% increase in financial confidence after the workshop. The workshop provided valuable insights and lessons with participants, including the difference between saving and spending money, how interest works, the importance of budgeting, and shared resources available to help them build their financial futures, including helpful online spreadsheets.

Indigenous Peoples’ Money and Youth: In 2024, IG and CFEE partnered with Indigenous contributors to adapt the existing, award-winning Money and Youth resource to align with the interests, needs and cultural factors relevant to Indigenous youth. Since January 2025, IG and CFEE have held six educator workshops and three youth workshops as part of the Indigenous Peoples’ Money and Youth pilot program, which has also seen 37 class orders placed, representing 2,000 books distributed across Canada.

“I learned the difference between saving and investing money [and how to] apply this concept to my life by considering which one is the best option due to my circumstances. I learned about wants and needs in money decisions. I will apply this concept to my life by reminding myself what is needed and what is wanted every time I'm looking to buy something.”

Taking action to build a brighter future

These initiatives are part of IG’s Empower Your Tomorrow community platform, designed to equip Canadians with the tools, resources and confidence they need to take charge of their financial futures and improve their financial well-being. Working with CFEE is one way we’re empowering Canadians to reach their goals and build a healthier, brighter future for themselves, their families and their communities.
