In 2021, IG partnered with Prosper Canada, a national charity dedicated to expanding life-changing financial empowerment services, innovating for greater inclusion and impact, and eliminating barriers to financial well-being, to launch the Building Financial Wellness in First Nations project.
Together with local agencies, Sudbury Community Service Centre (SCSC), SEED Winnipeg, and Community Financial Counselling Services (CFCS) and with the support of AFOA Canada, this community driven initiative works directly with Indigenous communities across Ontario and Manitoba. The project provides free, culturally appropriate financial empowerment services, including:
- Access to government-issued ID services
- Tax filing and benefit assistance
- Money management support
- Capacity building for community organizations

In 2025, to better support the needs of remote Indigenous communities, Prosper Canada and IG expanded services through the introduction of an innovative virtual financial help service. Operated by CFCS, in collaboration with local Manitoba partners such as SEED Winnipeg and Indigenous communities, the Remote Video Helpline expands access to free, face-to-face tax filing, access to benefits, and financial coaching supports that would not be available otherwise.
Changing lives through financial empowerment
Since its launch, the Financial Wellness in First Nations project has achieved remarkable impact:
- Over $32 million in new income secured for community members through tax filing and benefits access
- 13,000+ Indigenous community members supported
- 8,500+ tax returns filed
- 3,400+ ID applications
- 3,000+ financial literacy session participants
From debt to a fresh start: a real-life story of hope
The program has transformed thousands of lives across Canada. Marlene Chiarotto, Vice President of Impact and Operations at Prosper Canada, shared the story of a Manitoba couple who hadn’t filed taxes in nine years. With three kids and over $100,000 in debt, they felt overwhelmed and hopeless. After visiting a free income tax clinic run by Prosper Canada’s partner, CFCS, the couple finally filed their outstanding returns, accessing more than $145,000 in unclaimed benefits. This is just one powerful example of the life-changing results that Prosper Canada and IG’s partnership and commitment is making.
Turning commitment into action
IG’s partnership with Prosper Canada is another example of how we’re driving impact through our Empower Your Tomorrow community program. By collaborating with organizations across Canada, we’re equipping individuals and families with the knowledge and tools to create lasting financial security.
